The Bangladesh women's hockey team lost to Chinese Taipei 3-2 to finish fifth in the six-team Pool A of the 20th Asian Games at the Gifu Prefectural Green Stadium in Japan on Sunday. Bangladesh led 2-1 at halftime, but Chinese Taipei scored twice in the second half to secure the win. Kona Akter scored two field goals for Bangladesh in the 19th and 24th minutes. Yu-ting Huang gave Chinese Taipei the lead with a field goal in the sixth minute. Then Kona Akter's two goals put Bangladesh ahead 2-1. However, Yu-chiu Wang levelled the score with a field goal in the 45th minute, and Yu-ting Huang scored the match-winner from a penalty corner in the 49th minute. Earlier, on September 20, Bangladesh women's hockey team made their Asian Games debut, where they suffered a crushing 13-0 defeat to China. China was the four-time gold medal winner. Bangladesh's dismal campaign continued as they lost to Malaysia 3-1 and South Korea 8-0. However, they drew 3-3 against Kazakhstan to earn one point. With one point from five games, Bangladesh will now play the ninth-place decider against Pool B fifth-place finisher Singapore on October 2. This match is crucial for Bangladesh, as a win would secure them ninth place in the Asian Games. Overall, the campaign for the Bangladesh women's hockey team was challenging, but the performance of players like Kona Akter gives hope for the future. Participating in a major event like the Asian Games is an achievement in itself, which will help develop hockey in Bangladesh.
